Additional Description: The 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint is a well-regarded issue, known for its excellent strike quality and eye appeal, traits that consistently distinguished the output of this particular mint. Identified by the “S” mint mark on the reverse below the wreath.
The 1881-S is especially favored by collectors because it often survives in mint state with sharp details and strong luster. The eagle’s breast feathers and Liberty’s hair, areas often weak on coins from other mints, are frequently well defined on San Francisco examples, reflecting superior die work and handling.

As with all Morgan Dollars, the coin was designed by George T. Morgan. The obverse features Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with agricultural symbols, while the reverse shows a heraldic eagle grasping arrows and an olive branch, imagery that balances strength with peace.

Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, issued under the authority of the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase millions of ounces of silver annually, turning much of it into silver dollars regardless of public demand.
