Additional Information:  A carved red stone sculpture of a stylized Zemi spirit figure with exaggerated facial features in a squatting position. The back has detailed carvings of the back including the spine and ribs along with designs. 

The carving was used in ceremonies and rituals by the Taino people.  Zemis were important deities or spirits which represent various aspects of nature and life being used for guidance, protection, or blessings. 

The Taino were the first indigenous group that Columbus met on his first stop (San Salvador, the Bahamas) Zemis were channels to the ancient gods and were ceremoniously implemented during hallucinogenic journeys. Taino art reflects their passion with the afterlife and with spiritual influence from the gods of old.
