About this lot

Estimated Value: $  300-1,000

Origin: Teotihuacan, Mexico Pre-Columbian 3rd- 7th Century

Dimensions:  4x2in

Condition: A small flake is missing from the top foot and body

Additional Information: Ancient City Teotihuacan, Mexican hand carved and polished serpentine green and white stone. The carving is of a figure that has squared off shoulders and a boxy head and legs, straight arms, with simple facial details. The carving is thin and the back has no carved detail.

The sculpture was used for daily rituals and associated with burials which is connected to the city’s spiritual belief system.

Teotihuacan is about 50 miles outside of Mexico City. Along with the Olmecs, often referred to as one of the cradles of Mexican and Hispanic culture. Between 400 and 600 AD, the city had a greater population than London and Paris during those years. The city was abandoned around 800 AD and ethnographers still don’t why as is the case with the Maya. The Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon are visually stunning.
