About this lot
Estimated Value: $1300-3000
Origin: Pre-Colombian Costa Rica 1000-1500 AD
Dimensions: 7×8.5×13 in.
Condition: Light wear, dirt stains, and chips along the inside and edges on some spots. Very light cracking in some spots as well.
Additional Information: A handmade fired Nicoya jaguar urn from Costa Rica. A Pataky polychrome painted effigy vessel depicts what may be a jaguar effigy with arms and legs formed and painted into the vase. The vessel has three tripod legs and two handles with bird shaped faces at the top of each small handle, and the legs are painted to look like paws. Along the rim and upper part of the vase are geometric designs and figures. The vessel is elaborately painted with swirl and dot designs in red-orange and black colors. The tripod feet are also hollowed out with holes towards their tops and some seem to have rattles inside.
Jaguars are often painted on South American pottery to show symbols of power, strength, and authority, particularly among the elite and supernatural realms.
Reportedly the provenance is Arte Xibalba, FL.
