Additional Description: The U.S. Silver Quarters from 1928 to 1930, followed by those from 1934 to 1937 and again in 1939, trace the transition from the artistic flourish of the Standing Liberty design to the enduring presence of the Washington quarter. The earlier issues—1928 through 1930—feature Hermon A. MacNeil’s Standing Liberty, a richly symbolic figure introduced in 1916, embodying both strength and peace. By the early 1930s, however, production paused during the economic strain of the Great Depression. In 1934, the quarter returned to circulation with John Flanagan’s portrait of George Washington, commemorating the first president’s bicentennial. The design, more formal and restrained, reflected the New Deal era’s emphasis on national unity and civic virtue. Quarters from 1934 to 1937 and 1939 maintained this design, struck in 90% silver and widely circulated during a period of economic recovery and shifting global tensions.
