Additional Description: The U.S. Silver Quarters spanning 1934, 1943, 1951, 1953 to 1959, 1960 to 1962, and 1964 trace a long arc of American history through a single, enduring design: John Flanagan’s portrait of George Washington. First introduced in 1932 to commemorate Washington’s bicentennial, the design became permanent in 1934, marking the beginning of a new era in American coinage. The 1934 and 1943 issues reflect a nation recovering from the Great Depression and fully engaged in World War II, when silver quarters circulated widely as everyday instruments of a mobilized economy.

By the 1950s, quarters from 1951 and 1953 to 1959 witnessed postwar prosperity, suburban expansion, and the quiet confidence of a society focused on growth and domestic life. The early 1960s issues—1960 to 1962—continued this sense of stability, yet were minted during rising concerns over silver costs and inflation. The 1964 quarter marked the end of an era: it was the final year U.S. quarters were struck in 90% silver before the transition to clad coinage in 1965.
