Additional Description: The 1963 and 1964 U.S. Silver Half Dollars represent the final chapter of one series and the poignant beginning of another. The 1963 issue was the last full year of the Franklin half dollar, designed by John R. Sinnock and struck in 90% silver. Its austere portrayal of Benjamin Franklin and the Liberty Bell reflected mid-century values of civic responsibility and historical reverence. In contrast, the 1964 half dollar introduced the Kennedy design, created in the immediate aftermath of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. The new obverse, featuring a youthful and idealized profile of Kennedy, was sculpted by Gilroy Roberts, while the reverse by Frank Gasparro retained the presidential seal.
