Additional Description: The Franklin Half Dollars of 1962 and 1963 represent the final chapter in a quietly dignified series that bridged two very different Americas. Struck at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, these coins were produced in large numbers at a time when silver still moved freely in commerce and the half dollar retained real purchasing power. Designed by John R. Sinnock and first issued in 1948, the series broke with tradition by featuring a statesman rather than a president or allegorical figure. Franklin’s unidealized portrait, paired with the Liberty Bell on the reverse, offered a reserved, almost austere vision of national identity, rooted in Enlightenment values and civic responsibility. By 1962 and 1963, the coin’s design had become familiar, even routine, but that would change abruptly with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963. Within weeks, the Franklin series was retired to make way for the Kennedy Half Dollar.
