Additional Description: The 1853 Braided Hair Half Cent represents one of the final issues in the long-running half cent series, which by then was nearing the end of its role in everyday American commerce. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the coin features Liberty’s classic braided hair style, a refined and elegant portrait that marked a departure from earlier designs. Struck exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1853 issue was produced in modest numbers as the denomination gradually fell out of favor amid changing economic practices and the rising use of larger denominations
