Additional Description: The 1853 Seated Liberty Quarter with Arrows and Rays is a distinctive and historically significant issue, produced during a pivotal moment in U.S. monetary policy. In response to rising silver prices, Congress mandated a reduction in the weight of silver coins, and to clearly mark the change, the Mint added arrowheads on either side of the date and a radiant halo of rays around the eagle on the reverse. This visual distinction was short-lived, appearing only in 1853, making it a one-year type and a favorite among collectors of transitional coinage. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the coin retains the classical seated figure of Liberty on the obverse, while the added rays lend a sense of urgency and brightness to the reverse.
