Additional Description:  The 1986 American Eagle One Ounce Proof Gold Bullion Coin marks the inaugural release of the United States Mint’s modern gold bullion program, authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Struck in 91.67% fine gold (22-karat), the coin features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic depiction of Liberty striding forward with torch and olive branch in hand, adapted from the famed 1907 Double Eagle. The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, presents a family of eagles beneath a rising sun—a symbolic image of strength, unity, and national identity. Unlike the standard bullion issue, the proof version is struck with specially polished dies and multiple strikes, resulting in mirror-like fields and frosted devices. The 1986 proof holds particular historical significance as the first of its kind, marking the United States’ reentry into gold coin production for the public after a hiatus of more than fifty years.
