Additional Description: The 1814 Classic Head Cent is one of the final issues in a short-lived but historically rich series that bridged the early and middle phases of U.S. copper coinage. Designed by John Reich and struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the coin features Liberty with distinctive curled hair bound by a fillet inscribed “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen stars and framed by a broad, slightly concave rim. The reverse bears a bold wreath enclosing the denomination “ONE CENT,” emblematic of the straightforward, utilitarian design favored in early federal coinage. The 1814 issue is particularly notable as the last cent struck before a multi-year hiatus caused by a copper shortage linked to the War of 1812. As such, it occupies a transitional space in American numismatic history, marking the end of the Classic Head design and the conclusion of cent production until the introduction of the Coronet Head in 1816.
