Additional Description: The 1852 Braided Hair Half Cent represents the quiet final years of a denomination that had once played a vital role in early American commerce. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the coin features a refined neoclassical portrait of Liberty, her hair braided and tied in a bun, surrounded by thirteen stars. By the early 1850s, however, the half cent had become increasingly obsolete, its purchasing power diminished and its practical use limited in a growing, industrializing economy. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in relatively low numbers, the 1852 issue is part of a brief final phase before the denomination’s discontinuation in 1857.
