Additional Description: The 1928 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle holds a distinct place in American numismatics as the final issue struck for circulation before the sweeping changes of the 1930s. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, it features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ renowned design—Liberty striding forward with torch and olive branch, framed by the rays of a rising sun. The reverse, with its eagle in flight, remains a powerful image of national optimism and strength.

Though the mintage was high, and many examples survived in bank vaults and international holdings, the coin’s significance lies beyond scarcity. It represents the last chapter of routine gold coinage before the Great Depression and the federal gold recall of 1933 brought the era to a close.
