Additional Description: The 1908 No Motto Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of American coinage. Struck during the first year of the series, it reflects President Theodore Roosevelt’s push to elevate the nation’s coin designs through classical artistry and bold symbolism. The coin omits the motto “In God We Trust”, a deliberate choice aligned with Roosevelt’s belief that invoking the divine on currency was inappropriate. This omission, however, sparked public controversy and led to the motto’s reinstatement later that same year.

Designed by the celebrated sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the obverse features Liberty in full stride, torch and olive branch in hand, radiating confidence and purpose. The reverse captures an eagle mid-flight against the rising sun, evoking motion, strength, and national aspiration.
