Additional Description: The 1928 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is the final issue of the series struck for general circulation, bringing to a quiet close one of the most celebrated chapters in American numismatic design. Minted in Philadelphia during the final years of the gold standard, it features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic depiction of Liberty striding forward with torch and olive branch, framed by radiant sunbeams. The reverse, with its sweeping image of an eagle in flight, remains one of the most powerful expressions of national ideals ever placed on a U.S. coin.

Although the 1928 issue had a relatively high mintage, it gains importance as the last widely distributed Double Eagle before the disruptions of the Great Depression and the eventual recall of gold coinage in 1933. Many were melted down during the government’s gold recall, though a significant number survived in bank holdings.
