About this lot

Title: Raphaelesque Head Exploding/Cosmic Madonna

Medium: Color Lithograph On Paper

Style: Surrealism / Nuclear Mysticism

Dimension: Framed: 27.25 x 34 in.

Condition: No visible flaws.

Additional Information: Has letter of authenticity. Limited-edition color lithograph after Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí (1904–1989), titled Cosmic Madonna, also associated with the composition Raphaelesque Head Exploding. The work presents a fragmented female head inspired by Renaissance depictions of the Madonna, surrounded by architectural, geometric, and organic forms.

The composition reflects Dalí’s Nuclear Mysticism period, combining scientific concepts, religious imagery, classical art, and fragmented forms. A Pantheon-like dome and oculus appear within the upper portion of the composition, surrounded by floating and cascading elements.

The imagery reflects Dalí’s interest in Renaissance masters, particularly Raphael. The contrast between the classical female visage and fragmented surroundings combines traditional religious imagery with Dalí’s Surrealist visual language. Color lithograph on paper, pencil-signed and numbered 180/300.
