About this lot

Artist: Charles Bennet

Title: Alexandra Of Denmark Reproduction

Medium: Oil Painting

Style: 19th-Century Royal Portrait / Winterhalter-Inspired

Dimension: Framed: 54.5 x 66.5 in.

Condition: Has intense Craquelure, a fine network of tiny hairline cracks that form across the paint or varnish layer. Also some dentation.

Additional Information: Modern portrait painting inspired by Franz Xaver Winterhalter’s 1864 Portrait of Alexandra of Denmark, depicting Alexandra, then Princess of Wales, in an elaborate formal gown. The composition follows the pose and grand presentation associated with Winterhalter’s 19th-century royal portraiture, with a voluminous gown against a dark background. The rendering of the facial features, hands, and the shading of the skin lacks the porcelain-smooth texture, intricate blending, and lifelike depth characteristic.

The work is a later copy or stylistic adaptation rather than an authenticated original. Differences in facial rendering, proportions, brushwork, coloring, and surface detail distinguish it from Winterhalter’s highly refined royal portraits. The gown is rendered in a saturated lime-yellow tone with simplified fabric and lace detailing. The lower right bears a modern cursive signature reading “Charles Bennet.” The signature and execution indicate a later artist’s interpretation of the Winterhalter composition.
