About this lot

Estimated Value: $750-950

Origin: Pre-Columbian West Mexico, (Nayarit) Chinesco figure. 200 BC to 300 AD.

Dimensions: 7.5x3x6.5 in.

Condition: Light dirt and wear throughout, it also has numbers written on the bottom. Looks to have black pigment wear throughout the figure.

Additional Information: A hand-built and burnished pottery female figure painted with red-brown, cream and black pigments. The figure is characterized by an abstract form with  large head and bulbous spread legs. The figure is hollow with a hole in the back. These figures were typically found in shaft tombs, and were potentially connected to rituals associated with death.

Chinesco was a term given by art dealers due to their perceived Chinese-like appearance.

Chinesco figures are considered the highest level of Nayarit artistic tradition with their balance and decoration. Most Nayarit anthromorphic sculpture can be perceived as clunky and out-of-proportion as most were placed in the walls of deep shaft graves with the dead. But the Nayarit were very endearing within their extended families which is why they are often shown in male-female pairs.

Provenance is reportedly Howard Rose, Arte Primitivo, NY
