About this lot

Origin: Pre-Columbian, Jalisco, West Mexico. ca. 300 BCE-300 CE.

Dimensions: 6×4.5×11.5 in. 

Condition: Light wear and scuffs throughout, some of the paint pigment is wearing off

Additional Information: A handmade clay figure of a male in a seated position. The figure has a round body and a small phallus beneath a large belly. His hand is held to his mouth as if he is smoking. His hair and ears have lines carved out to create details across the ears and hair. It has a stone burnished body and face are painted with white pigment. The figure has tripod legs, and is hollow with a hole on the top of its head. 

The tradition is to show the figures with with carnal deformation and carved hair, which represent warriors or protectors of the dead and placed into shaft tombs. Another figure meant to be buried in a Pre-Columbian West Mexico deep shaft grave.

Provenance is reportedly Howard Rose, Arte Primitivo, NY.
