These figures are known to be from the Nayarit region on Mexico’s western coast. The Pre-Columbian cultures of Western Mexico from Colima, Nayarit, Jalisco and Michoacan would construct and dig deep shaft graves into the dry, arid earth and hold mass mortuary ceremonies where the dead were placed into the walls of these shafts. The base would open into other various chambers and were often dug beneath a dwelling or family. They would often house the remains of related family remains. Figural sculptures such as this Nayarit figure were placed along side the dead on order to accompany them to the afterlife.
