Additional Description: The 1901 Liberty Head Eagle, or $10 gold piece, stands as a final flourish in a long-running series that had, by then, become a fixture of American coinage. First introduced in 1838 and designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Eagle represented stability in a century marked by war, expansion, and financial upheaval. By 1901, the coin’s design had changed little: Liberty faces left, crowned with a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, her hair bound in classical style. The reverse bears a stately heraldic eagle, clutching arrows and an olive branch, framed by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination. Struck primarily for circulation in an era when gold still moved through everyday commerce, particularly in the American West, the 1901 issue came from the Philadelphia Mint.
