Additional Description: The 1881 Liberty Head Half Eagle, a $5 gold coin, is a product of quiet continuity within one of the most enduring and widely used coin series in American history. Designed by Christian Gobrecht and first introduced in 1839, the Liberty Half Eagle had by 1881 become a familiar presence in both banking and commerce, particularly in the gold-reliant economies of the South and West. Its design remained unchanged for decades, a testament to its acceptance and utility, with Liberty portrayed in classical profile on the obverse, her coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars. The reverse bears a stately heraldic eagle, shielded and vigilant, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST appearing above on a ribbon since 1866.
