Additional Description: The 1881 Liberty Head Eagle, a $10 gold piece struck in the heart of the Gilded Age, reflects a period in American history defined by industrial expansion, political realignment, and increasing confidence on the world stage. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Head motif had by then been a mainstay of U.S. coinage for over four decades. Its restrained, neoclassical profile of Liberty; her hair neatly bound, coronet inscribed with LIBERTY, and surrounded by thirteen stars—conveyed a sense of stability and tradition, values held in high regard during a time of rapid transformation.

The reverse features the familiar heraldic eagle, wings spread, bearing a shield on its chest and grasping both arrows and an olive branch. In 1881, this design included the post-Civil War motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon above the eagle, a feature added in 1866 that reflected the nation’s shifting moral and religious tone during Reconstruction.
