Additional Description: The 1885-S Liberty Head Half Eagle is a quietly significant piece of late 19th-century American coinage, struck at the San Francisco Mint during a time when gold still played a daily role in commerce, especially in the American West. Part of the long-running Liberty Head series designed by Christian Gobrecht, this $5 gold coin features the familiar image of Liberty in profile on the obverse, crowned with a classical coronet inscribed LIBERTY, her hair neatly bound and surrounded by thirteen stars. The reverse presents a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, with a shield at its breast and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above, reflecting post–Civil War sentiment and legislation.
