Additional Description: The 1854 Three Dollar Liberty gold piece stands apart as one of the most curious and distinctive coins in American numismatics, born of legislative intent, yet never quite embraced by the public it was meant to serve. Introduced in 1854 and struck only until 1889, the $3 denomination was the product of a specific economic logic: it matched the cost of purchasing a full sheet of 100 three-cent postage stamps, newly standardized that year. Though practical in theory, in practice the denomination proved awkward, and the coin saw limited circulation. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, the coin features a unique obverse: not the familiar Liberty in coronet, but rather a stylized representation of Liberty as a Native American princess, wearing a feathered headdress inscribed LIBERTY.
