Additional Description: The 1963 U.S. Silver Half Dollar marks the final year of the Franklin series, a coin whose understated design and historical sensibility reflected the tone of postwar America. Struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, it features the unembellished profile of Benjamin Franklin on the obverse, an Enlightenment figure chosen not for political office, but for his enduring contributions to American civic life. The reverse, bearing the Liberty Bell and a small eagle, balances national symbolism with mid-century restraint.

By 1963, the Franklin half dollar had become a familiar presence in circulation, though never widely collected during its time. That would change abruptly in November of that year with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The series ended immediately, replaced by the Kennedy design in early 1964.
