Additional Description: The 1968 U.S. Half Dollar, struck in 40% silver, continues the transitional phase of American coinage that began after silver content was reduced in 1965. Bearing the enduring image of President John F. Kennedy, the coin reflects both national memory and changing monetary policy. Unlike earlier issues in this series, the 1968 half dollar was the first to carry a mintmark since 1964, with all circulation strikes produced at the Denver Mint.

Though still containing silver, its intrinsic value was diminished compared to the 90% silver coins of previous years. The shift to a silver-clad composition, with a copper core and outer layers of silver alloy, marked the government’s effort to balance tradition with practicality.
