Additional Description: The U.S. half dollars struck from 1965 to 1969 represent a distinct and short-lived era in American coinage, defined by compromise and transition. In response to rising silver prices and widespread coin hoarding, the U.S. Mint reduced the silver content of half dollars from 90% to 40%, beginning in 1965. These coins retained a silver-clad outer layer but were bonded to a copper core, preserving some intrinsic value while easing pressure on the nation’s silver reserves. The design remained unchanged: a dignified profile of President John F. Kennedy on the obverse, with the Presidential Seal on the reverse, a tribute born from national tragedy just two years earlier.
