Additional Description: The 1947 U.S. Silver Half Dollar marks the final year of the Walking Liberty series, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful designs in American coinage. Created by Adolph A. Weinman and struck in 90% silver, it features Liberty striding toward the sun on the obverse and a perched eagle on the reverse—symbols of strength, progress, and national purpose.
From 1962 to 1963, the Franklin Half Dollar, struck in 90% silver, marked the end of a reserved, civic-minded design era. In 1964, following President Kennedy’s assassination, the Kennedy Half Dollar debuted, also in 90% silver, becoming both a memorial and a widely hoarded coin.
Beginning in 1965, silver content dropped to 40%, reflecting rising metal prices and changing economic policy. These silver-clad Kennedy halves were produced through 1969, after which silver was removed entirely from circulating coinage. Together, the coins of this period trace a shift in U.S. coinage, from tradition to tribute, and from intrinsic value to modern materials.
