Additional Description: The 1851 Braided Hair Half Cent is part of the final chapter in the history of this small denomination, produced during a time when half cents were already falling out of favor in American commerce. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the Braided Hair series reflects a more refined and neoclassical aesthetic, with Liberty’s portrait framed by thirteen stars and crowned with a braided bun. By 1851, the coin’s practical use was waning, yet it remained in limited production at the Philadelphia Mint for collectors and institutional purposes.
