Additional Description: The 1853 Braided Hair Large Cent represents one of the later issues in a long-running series that had defined American copper coinage since the late 18th century. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this cent features Liberty with her braided hair tied in a bun, surrounded by thirteen stars—an enduring neoclassical design by Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht. By the early 1850s, the large cent was nearing the end of its practical use, increasingly viewed as bulky and outdated in a rapidly modernizing economy.
