Additional Description:  The 1856 Braided Hair Large Cent comes from the final years of large cent production, just one year before the denomination was discontinued in favor of the smaller Flying Eagle cent. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features a refined portrait of Liberty with braided hair, framed by thirteen stars, while the reverse bears the denomination encircled by a laurel wreath. By the mid-1850s, large cents were becoming increasingly unpopular in circulation due to their size and weight, and public demand for a smaller, more practical coin grew. Though the 1856 issue saw a substantial mintage, its historical significance lies in its position at the end of an era—serving as one of the last examples of a coin that had circulated since the birth of the U.S. Mint in 1793.
