Additional Description: Struck between 1925 and 1928, then briefly again in 1934 and 1935, the Silver Peace Dollars reflect a nation’s shifting ideals in the wake of war and economic uncertainty. Anthony de Francisci’s design, featuring a radiant Liberty and a watchful eagle, captured the hope for peace that defined the early 1920s. By the mid-to-late 1920s, production waned as the requirements of the Pittman Act were fulfilled, making issues like the 1928 Philadelphia dollar especially scarce and sought after. When the coin returned during the Depression, its function was largely symbolic rather than practical—a quiet nod to past promises in a time of mounting global tension. These years, taken together, chart a subtle transformation in the coin’s purpose and meaning, balancing artistry with historical weight.
