Additional Description: The 1922 and 1923 Peace Dollars reflect the early maturity of a design born from the optimism following World War I. As the first full-production years of the series, they were struck in enormous numbers to fulfill the mandates of the Pittman Act, which required the replacement of silver dollars melted during the war. Both years saw production at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, with subtle variations in strike quality—San Francisco issues, for example, are often less sharply defined due to worn dies and high-speed minting. While common in circulated grades, these coins offer a study in how mass production began to influence artistry. De Francisci’s high-relief design, originally introduced in 1921, had already been modified by 1922 to a lower relief, better suited to the technical demands of large-scale minting.
