About this lot
Manufacturer: Minpei / Awaji Style
Period: Circa 1890–1930
Material: Glazed earthenware
Dimensions: Approx. 4.75 in. each
Condition: Signs of wear such as discoloration and fine scratches. One plate has a hairline crack going from the center to the edge.
Additional Information: A set of four matching Japanese Oribe-style ceramic tea saucers associated with the four traditional principles of chanoyu (Japanese tea ceremony). Attributed to the style of Minpei / Awaji ware, each decorated with a highly stylized floral motif in raised relief against a rich, deep olive-green glaze. The central botanical design features contrasting cream and olive tones, creating a striking graphic effect.
The plates exhibit an attractive fine overall crackle to the glaze , with variations in color and surface typical of early Japanese art pottery. The reverse is finished in a pale cream glaze with an exposed earthenware foot ring and bears a faint impressed mark. The combination of deep green glaze, extensive crazing, and molded/relief floral ornamentation is particularly characteristic of Minpei/Awaji pottery.
