Medium: Tempera And Gold On Lacquered Papier-Mâché
Origin: Russia
Dimension: Framed: Approx. 21 x 24 in.

Additional Information: Hand-painted Russian Palekh lacquer miniature panel titled “Discover America,” depicting Christopher Columbus presenting a map with his sailing ships and accompanying figures in the background. The historical composition is rendered in the distinctive Palekh miniature tradition, with elongated figures, stylized landscape elements, fine linear detailing, and extensive gold ornament.
The scene is painted in tempera on a dark lacquered papier-mâché ground, with delicate gold detailing highlighting the ship rigging, garments, architectural elements, and surrounding landscape. Has small gold writing in Russian on the bottom. The black ground provides the characteristic high contrast associated with Russian lacquer miniatures.
The panel is attributed to artist Scheley and is presented as a framed and matted flat lacquer plaque. An accompanying official certificate identifies the work as a Palekh lacquer miniature titled “Discover America” and records the piece as number 66 from its limited production series. The certificate also identifies approval through the Artistic Council of the Association of the Artists of Palekh. Contained within a black frame with cream cloth backround.
