Origin: Japan
Dimension:Framed: Approx. 16.5 x 19.25 in.

Additional Information: This framed Japanese polychrome print depicts the legendary samurai Kimura Shigenari (1593–1615), one of the most celebrated warriors of the late Sengoku and early Edo periods. Executed in the traditional musha-e (warrior print) style, the composition portrays Shigenari seated in a composed, dignified pose dressed in elaborately detailed kozane armor with finely rendered light blue, white, and gold lacing. His calm expression, sharply defined features, and formal posture embody the ideals of courage, discipline, and honor associated with the samurai class. The warm ochre background directs attention to the central figure while enhancing the rich colors and intricate details of the armor.
Positioned beside the warrior is a large black battlefield drum prominently bearing the kanji character “前” (Mae), a symbol closely associated with Kimura Shigenari in historical illustrations. A vertical identification cartouche in the upper right corner bears the inscription 木村重成, identifying the subject by name. Kimura Shigenari is remembered for his unwavering loyalty to Toyotomi Hideyori during the Siege of Osaka (1614–1615) and for the legendary account of perfuming his helmet with incense before his final battle, an enduring symbol of samurai honor and composure in the face of death.
The print is presented under glass in a custom double-matted presentation with an off-white outer mat and gold-toned inner border, housed in a glossy black wood frame with a gilt inner accent that complements the traditional Japanese aesthetic. This artwork has not been verified as an original Edo-period woodblock print and should be regarded as an unverified example that may be a later reproduction or decorative print produced after the original design. Regardless of its production date, it presents an attractive depiction of one of Japan’s most admired historical warriors and serves as a striking display piece for collectors of Japanese art, samurai history, and Asian decorative arts.
