About this lot

Country of Origin: Unspecified; Tibetan Buddhist/Himalayan cultural tradition

Period: 20th century

Manufacturer: Unspecified

Medium: Machine woven figured brocade with metallic effect threads and separate patterned brocade lining; exact fiber content likely rayon and/or synthetic fiber with possible silk content.

Dimensions: Approx. 12 ft long × 16 in. wide

Condition: No Visible Flaws, Edges are finished and the textile retains sewn suspension/pole sleeves. No major tears or substantial losses observed.

Additional Information:
Large Tibetan Buddhist shambu type shrine room hanging or ceremonial valance of long, narrow proportions, measuring approximately 12 feet long by 16 inches wide.

The principal face is woven in rich red with gold toned decoration incorporating repeating Buddhist auspicious imagery, including prominent endless knot motifs surrounded by stylized floral, cloud and scrolling ornament. The reverse is separately lined with a contrasting green, mauve, cream and brown figured brocade.

The textile is a purpose made finished furnishing rather than unused brocade yardage. Its lined construction, finished edges and sewn tubular suspension or pole pockets indicate that it was intended to be hung or suspended. Its approximately 16-inch width and extended 12-foot length closely correspond to the proportions associated with Tibetan Buddhist shambu type textiles used as decorative valances and hangings in shrine rooms and ceremonial settings.
