About this lot

Artist: Toyokuni Bijin

Title: bijin-ga (portrait of a beautiful woman)

Medium: Print

Origin: Japan

Dimension:Framed: Approx.9.5 x 12 in.

Condition: Scuffs on frame. No visible flaws on artwork.

Additional Information: This framed Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print depicts a traditional bijin-ga (portrait of a beautiful woman) walking along a coastal landscape while holding a colorful bamboo parasol amid falling snow or rain. The elegantly dressed figure wears a richly patterned kimono in vibrant orange, teal, and gold tones, while dramatic waves and sea foam create a striking backdrop. The print is professionally double-matted and displayed in a decorative wood-tone frame.

The lower corner bears the inscription “Toyokuni ga” (豊国画), meaning “drawn by Toyokuni,” accompanied by a traditional red hanko (artist’s seal). This signature pays homage to the renowned Edo-period master Utagawa Toyokuni and his successors, particularly Toyokuni III (Kunisada), who also used the “Toyokuni ga” signature on many works.

Although it carries the historic Toyokuni signature, this example is not a verified Edo-period original. Based on its publication style and framing, it is believed to be a mid-to-late 20th-century Uchida Art Company of Kyoto recarved reproduction or commemorative woodblock print, created in the traditional Japanese manner after the original design.
