About this lot
Artist: Unknown
Title: Unknown
Medium: Painted Decoration On Lacquered Wood
Origin: East Asian / Shan Shui-Inspired
Dimension: Framed: Approx. 13.75 x 19.75 in.
Condition: Small chipping and scuffs along edges. Background underneath lacquer has a crackling wrinkle effect.
Additional Information: Vintage Asian lacquered wood landscape panel depicting a tranquil river or mountain valley scene in a predominantly amber-gold and black palette. The composition features misty mountain forms, traditional riverside structures or pagodas, trees, and small boats with figures traveling across the water.
The vertical composition reflects the principles of traditional East Asian shan shui, or “mountain-water,” landscape painting, with layered mountains and atmospheric space creating a sense of depth. The dramatic peaks and winding waterway evoke the landscape traditions associated with the Guilin and Li River region of China, although the exact geographic subject is not confirmed. Several traditional-looking buildings with red-orange roof accents appear along the shoreline, while small covered boats and figures occupy the middle and foreground. Fine dark linework and silhouetted vegetation contrast with the yellow-gold ground, creating an atmospheric monochromatic effect.
The artwork is executed on a lacquered wood panel, with painted or decorative imagery beneath a glossy lacquered surface. The format and construction are characteristic of mid- to late-20th-century Asian decorative lacquer art.
