About this lot
Country of Origin: Thailand
Period: Late 19th-20th Century
Manufacturer: Unspecified. No markings on base.
Medium: Believed to be cast bronze or brass.
Dimensions: Approx. 15 x 5 in.
Condition: Surface wear, oxidation, patina variation, and localized green copper alloy corrosion consistent with age. The crown, joined hands, legs, and long curved tail are intact. No obvious major breaks or repairs observed. Small dents may be present.
Additional Information: Thai cast metal figure depicting a Kinnari, or Kinnaree, the mythical half-woman, half-bird celestial being found in Hindu and Buddhist traditions of South and Southeast Asia. The figure is portrayed with a graceful female upper body and head beneath an elaborate pointed traditional crown or mongkut. The hands are held together in Anjali Mudra, a gesture of reverence or prayer. The lower portion transitions into an avian body with feathered or scaled detailing, bird-like feet, and a pronounced sweeping arched tail.
Kinnari figures are associated with celestial beings and the mythical Himavanta forest and are particularly prominent in Thai religious and decorative art. The figure appears to be cast bronze or brass with an aged metallic surface. The rough, unsmoothed bottom is proof of a high-quality, authentic piece. That texture is the hallmark of the traditional lost-wax casting method (cire perdue).
